Research
The applied research, development and services contribute to the solution of human problems in natural and social environments. The increased complexity of the problems and their associated rising costs mean that research activities are increasingly being developed in international cooperation. Today, no country can achieve advances in science and technology on its own. The major challenges of the present and future can only be mastered through shared responsibility. This is true for dealing with climate change, energy, security, migration and poverty reduction. Most departments deal with issues that transcend disciplinary boundaries and national interests. Exchanges with teams from related areas is part of everyday life for researchers, as they seek to cooperate for their mutual benefit by sharing ideas, results and existing resources. The European Research Area boasts not only cooperative features, but also is characterised by its competitive elements. Together with their academic and business partners, the ZHAW researchers take on the existing challenges and participate in bi-lateral and multi-lateral research projects and programmes.

- Our comprehensive approach to education and training enables the ZHAW to offer out students lifelong learning resources to support them in all stages of their careers.
- ZHAW training is relevant not only for Swiss professionals, but also for customers abroad. Current topics follow the latest developments in national and international labor markets and are focus on specific target groups. The excellent quality is ensured by faculty who have a close relationship to practice. They know the importance of international knowledge content, comparative approaches, intercultural competence and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

- The project is going to be implemented in the context of the Bologna Process, creation of one European Qualifications Framework and the subject area reference points developed by Tuning. Furthermore the project seeks to create European wide transparency with regard to higher education and training. This will allow for improved recognition of formal, informal and non formal learning against clear internationally established reference points.
- At present the Higher Education sector is working with the two existing European Qualification Frameworks. A Qualifications Framework is a common reference framework which links countries’ qualifications systems, acting as a translation device to make qualifications more readable and understandable across different countries and systems in Europe. A sector is understood here as a combination of related fields of study which is based on more or less comparable learning profiles.
